ISA Slots and Rackmount Computers

The ISA Slot format has been phased out of modern computing. Chances are, your company still has plenty of ISA boards that need a home. Luckily, today's makers of industrial rackmount computers are able to support ISA slots in up-to-date systems.

In use since the early 1980's and designed to connect peripheral cards to the motherboard, ISA (Industry Standard Architecture) allowed for bus mastering, although only the first 16 MB of main memory are available for direct access. The 8-bit bus ran at 4.77 MHz, while the 16-bit bus operated at 6 or 8 MHz. Though PCI slots hve displaced consumer needs for ISA, many industrial computing applications still rely on ISA Slot-based cards and devices.

Certain concerns apply when ordering a new, ISA-compatible system:

-What Operating System do you need to run? ISA Slots are supported by Windows XP, NT, 2000, 95 & Win3.1, but Vista and Windows 7 will not natively support ISA Slot Drivers. As technology continues to update, it's important to find a supplier who has the proper OS licenses to make sure your rackmount computer is ISA slot compatible.

-Can the new system be configured to your needs? Will the old cards in your ISA slots require new drivers? Make sure you're working with an industrial computer supplier with on-staff engineers who can help ensure compatibility with your new rackmount computer.

-How many ISA slots do you need? Will you require more in the future? Knowing this will help you find a rackmount computer with a backplane capable of growing with your business for years to come.

There’s no need to re-write drivers or keep out-of-date rackmount computers on hand because you’re worried about ISA slot compatibility. A reputibile supplier of industrial rackmount computers and their engineers can configure a high-tech modern system that will support your legacy ISA cards for years to come.
